I remember when the kids were little…
There was a small little local zoo we would go to and wander around. They didn’t have many animals, but it was a great place for toddlers to run around and get a taste of some wildlife…and my kids loved it!
We have been to zoos in at least 6 different states and the best by far is still the St. Louis Zoo in Missouri. But we have memories of all the others…we revisited some of them today while we were wandering at another small local zoo in our current location. 🙂
The kids have “fed the giraffes” before, at a zoo in South Carolina, but they had the opportunity to yet again get up close and personal with them today. Watching the joy on their faces was priceless…
We have had experiences with feeding lorikeets in the past, but today we had the opportunity to visit the parakeet enclosure and the kids enjoyed having them sit on their fingers while they ate seeds from their feeding sticks…
The best part of the zoo for me was a bat house…they had many fruit bats and I found them fascinating. They were so big and unique and amazing. (unfortunately no pics)
However, the funniest part was this orangutan…
He looked at all the passersby and chose carefully the ones who stepped just a bit too close for his liking…
…and then he casually formed a spit bomb in his mouth and flung it at the innocent bystander!
I laugh because I witnessed…I was thankfully not a target!
The time I spent with my kids today took me back in time to other experiences we’ve shared and helped me to realize that these experiences are ours. The memories we have of other experiences are ours alone as well. They don’t really associate going places with my ex…they associate them with me. And while that makes me somewhat sad for them (and him by default), I am beginning to feel at least happy for myself that I can enjoy these moments…and in turn happy for them that they at least have me helping to create moments they can remember.
I am happy for you that you are making new traditions. Your children will remember them with fondness.
It’s nice getting back to what makes me feel whole…I’ve always been the event organizer…and lucky for me, I get to participate and they still enjoy it!
You’re creating such good memories. I loved reading about them.
Thanks for reading! 🙂
Glad you guys had a good time, mama!
🙂
